Dr Zoe's House - Part Three

Hi everyone,
While Kinsey and Kitty are busy with moving and preparing for a vacation, Dr Zoe reminded me that she wanted some stone work around her cast iron stove.

I made a quick mock up from foam to check for size. Dr Zoe said it was just right.

I did some quick carving into the foam to resemble stonework.

I liked the idea and thought that maybe I could just cover the foam with spackle.

Feeling rather pleased with myself, I left it for a whole week to dry.
But to my dismay, it was still slightly wet and gooey underneath. Not so good.
Looks like I will have to resort to my trusty ol' paper mache tricks to make rocks.
Cheerio,
Sam

  1. Oh my goodness, building work, does it ever end!
What a shame the stuff didn't dry properly though, because it looked very effective.

    1. Thanks. Building never ends! That is part of the fun I guess. I know how to do paper mache so it will be a good alternative.

  2. I LOVE the look you achieved with the rocks! And how disappointing that they didn't dry! But you can make them even more fabulous with the paper mache!

  3. What a pity Sam, perhaps if you left it a little longer it may dry out. It certainly looks very effective. Good Luck!

    1. Thanks Xanadu. It might have dried out but I was a little worried about mold forming between the foam and spackle. Oh well, paper mache is fun anyway.

  4. That's a bummer. Wonder why? I love how it looks though.

    1. Thanks Sheila. Not sure why it didn't dry for me, but I do not want to take any chances of mold growing underneath.

  5. What a pity - this fireplace looked terrific. But as the saying goes - you live, you learn… and I have no doubt that Dr. Zoe will have a wonderful fireplace very soon.

    1. Thanks Birgit. I do a lot of things by trial and error. (Mostly error, but I do learn!)

  6. Hi Sam! I thought that looked like a great idea too! Too bad it didn't dry right after all. I am always afraid to "experiment like that..... I have visions of things crumbling a year later when I had built the whole room around them! LOL! At least this way you can use the trusted method before you had invested too much time in the experiment! Either way, I think the fireplace is going to look wonderful and can't wait to see an update! :):)

    1. Thanks Daydreamer. I think every time I do something it is an experiment! Oh well. I think my dolls are getting used to me taking my time and making things over and over again in all the various materials.
